I have a Carnhill VTB9045 for an EZ1290 build and pin2 is broken off. Will everything work fine if I solder directly to the base or would I need to open it up to repair?

Thanks!

Edit - Pin 2 is broken, not Pin7...not that it matters I guess

I have worked with 2 VTB9045s with broken pins.  On one, I just used some bus wire, tinned it really well, stuck it back in the hole, heated it up, and everything was OK.  On the other, that didn't work and I ended up taking the case off.  When I lifted up one side of  the white silicone material where the bad pin was, all of the wires on that side broke.  I ended up using some "wire wrap" wire, spliced all of the wires, and salvaged the transformer.
Good luck!

Yikes!!

That second scenario sounds like a nightmare, especially for a noob!

it broke clean against the metallic base and i can technically touch it when I put my finger on it, so I'm guessing it should be possible to solder right onto that. At least I hope so!

Post a picture please

Try to solder into it, that would be the easiest way out

I have done it several times without any problem.
I sometimes also have soldered back another pin with a small circle of wire at the bottom.
With to much heat it will go off, but with just the right amount its usable as well.
