Hey, I found a nice NOS high bandwidth Halldorson OPT made for a Williamson style amp. Since I only have one, should I build a :

1.) low power bass amp using the ultralinear taps and a pair of amperex 807s?
2.) guitar amp with or without the tap, and either 6l6GCs or 807s?

I have an old Williamson monoblock (w/807s) I can scavenge the PT from as well as choke and chassis and sockets, so I won't have to buy any parts (famous last words.) I've recently inherited a substantial tube inventory, so I should be able to source just about any tubes needed for the front end... like an Alembic preamp w/ 12ax7s into 807s, or older 6sl7s, etc?

What would be the coolest use for what I've got? I need ideas, no matter how far-fetched.

EDIT  Found some specs for it:

model H4103 |  pri. imped. 7400    | + or - 1db 10-100,000 Cps  | 40watts max  |100Ma max pri. DC/half | $22.50 in 1955... wow!

Thanks... Tod

How about a snarky comment?  Send it to CJ?

Seriously, if you've got the other parts for an 807 based amp, why not go that way?  Or look at it another way: what would get the most use around your house/studio/front porch/chicken coop/outhouse/dog house/land yacht/GulfStream V?

What output taps does it have?  What voltage does the power transformer provide?  If it will produce 350V+ B+, then you've got some options...6V6, 6L6, 807.  But if it's under 350V you could consider EL84s...

Cool piece of iron, and not a name many people know about.  I applaud your thoughts regarding 807's; go for it.  I'd personally build some sort of chassis/head that is good for whatever use you pick on a given day.  Iron with that bandwidth, I'd look at a hifi amp too.  definitely wouldn't limit to guitar.

Thanks for the thoughts!

I would consider a hi-fi implementation if I only had one more OPT to make a pair. I was thinking bass amp just because of how low this baby can go. I've got the same problem with my solitary McIntosh MC60 monoblock. Can't either afford or find another one to make a pair.  I've got a nice stash of Amperex 807s, so I think I'm gonna go for it. Besides... they look so cool with that big bottle and connection on the top!!  And the old Williamson donor I have was set up for 807s.  I think this came straight out of an old Stancor transformer design they were giving away back in the 50s in back of magazines.

It's a bitchin' mono sub amp to go with your single ended 2A3 monoblocks!  ;D
