Please tell me that I'm not the only one here with a "project list" as long as
my arm ? !!
I just realized what I have "on the go" at the moment :

2 x 1073's ( on hold as the parts are soooo expensive )
4 x 9k's ( PCB's stuffed )
2 x Green pre's ( PCB's stuffed )
2LA2A
D-AOC ( almost done )
Poor mans 670
2 x GSSL's ( PCB's stuffed )
Dual and single 1176's ( one as a 6176 rack has PCB stuffed )
2 x API 312's ( stripboard layout done not racked )
2 x API 312's ( 3nity PCB's )
Telefunken 2 x 676a rack up ( just need to cut the holes )
Ibanez AD150 delay repair
Studer stereo comp limiter repair/ rackup
16 channel summing mixer using Lawo 975's

I feel quite   about this and also "lighter" in the wallet !!

Marty ...... :sam:

Made an alike list a few years ago myself.... I'm afraid it wasn't shorter....

Upon realizing the amount of work(+fun) ahead AND the intended aim (music!) I decided to let it be, just finish stuff when time allows but give priority to using the stuff I already have.

So the plan is simple: make music with A-brand stuff, use decent mics & prosumer hardware & DAW to record & process it and once something-DIY is finished you replace. I mean, if it sounds a bit rotten with some prosumer-gear in the chain it's probably still your song at fault

I don't plan to have realized all DIY before my retirement but I don't intend to quit playing soon either. And most of the various projects around here will still be 'valid' for years to come.
So play brothers, play

Bye,

Peter

lets see,

gssl done, but final tweaks (turbo etc).
pultec almost done, can't seem to get the motivation to do the metalwork
2x hotrod preamps
2x ssl 9k preamps
passive summing mixer...

bought an orban eq that need a psu... i got almost all of the components though.

plus boards for dozens of projects, 525, fetboy, sontec...

and now the d-aoc and poormans comp! I don't have the money for them right now. this place is unfair.

Oh yes - working for several weeks in the studio here and in Berlin, so I will
be "playing" ( programming/ recording etc ) and using the stuff I have here done :)
This puts all the projects back to end July anyway, so I can save up some cash
for the missing traffo's etc etc !!

Things that are done and in use :
1176
GSSL & Turbo
2 x 9k's
Stereo Pico compressor
API 312 in temp case

I LOVE this place and would never have got this far without all you guys :green:

I have trimmed my list considerably in the past year. I use discretion now before buying PCBs and don't buy stuff just cause it's there. I had thousands of dollars tied up in projects I would never finish... because I really didn't want or need them.

Now I keep my list short (3 projects max) and I'm getting more done. I also do studio tech work for people around New Orleans, and this cuts into my DIY time.

Keep the list short... stay focused... long live DIY !!! Long live making music !!!

mine's about 6 times longer. I shut down a thread like this several years ago. Even here, people stopped talking to me for awhile.

I'm just trying not to add to it anymore. Let's win that one first......

I'm trying to focus in on only a couple projects and finish them myself. I think greg's advice is good, 3 projects is a lot easier to handle than 10.

My problem is I think I should do it all and get nothing done. Trying to focus on something and then move on to the next.

BTW make sure your on the PM660 list :) Adding Fuel to the fire.

That's my last one for now.

Everytime there's a grp buy , that may only be a one off or not come
around again , you don't want to risk missing it ,
then in my case , when i get stuck or don't have a part , thinking i'm being
productive move on to another project and thus have 10-15 half finished
BM projects , but there , didn't it feel good to get that out .........Oops

It's not only in your case... :)

Ultimately , it's o.k. as long as you use the stuff ,
so [ and i need to listen , relearn ALL the advice ]
make a list & flow chart , chip away commiting to one
small task at a time .

I'm scared [ scared ] if i make a list , i'll keep finding more

And although it fights the ethic , d.i.y. doesn't have the best resale
so grabbing things thinking you can get your money back later ,
not always the best reasoning .

sometimes i buy boards to support the buy , but need to remember
that i may have no intention of building it right away .

Sometimes before i finish a project mods come along and i get derailed
& relayed as i want it to be even better , Just do it !

Finish it first ! listen then decide . [ did i just say that ? ............
crap now i gotta ]

O.k. shall we start another thread with everyone's top 3 in the cue
projects to do ?

i had a list long as everyone here but i just decided to work on a project at a time! and its better as you spend money on one thing ...projects got finished faster.

My problem is, getting the parts is NOT the hard part on my to-do list..

Somebody (me?) has to finish all my new project designs.

I just got some new parts in this week that are just dead lumps until I make them do something useful.

JR

my list scares me to death!!!

i am making one very very large BOM so i can buy bits in one go and get the bulk discount. I dont mean buy everything in one go but get the resistors for one project and pick up more than needed.

be easier to hide what i am spending from myself

My project list is at least 10 items long - probably 15 or more actually... The problem is that sometimes I don't get anything done, because I don't know what project to start working on...

Best regards,

Mikkel C. Simonsen

I seem to get bursts of 3-4 projects completed in a week and a half sometimes, then nothing done at all for 2-3 months.

The number of projects I have lacking the final 2-3 hours of work is embarrassing, and points to a deeper psychological problem.

Or maybe it's the work from paying clients that keeps distracting and knocking me off target.......

It does take time, well for me anyway - and often I have precious little
of it !
I always seem to have stuff missing, VU's / a case / transformers etc.
I'm going to finish my D-AOC next, followed by the 1176 and a quartet of
9k's

MM.

I got a G9 and a R312 that I'm trying to finish, 95% done.

Next up is the 1176's that really got me in the sourcing DIY stuff anyways.

I do tend to buy extras all the time and have found that some stuff is always needed. I also look at uncompleted projects when I order and make sure if they need something I order to place enough of them for it also.

I also have allot of stuff thats in the 80-85% done.

I spent 6 hours one day this week getting a basic parts order list ready. Making lists and checking against my existing parts stock.

Then the next day I spent 10 hours sourcing the part #s in catalogs and placing orders.

I had to stop once I could no longer see or think.

I still haven't ordered everything I need for 5 specific projects.

The true cost of DIY.
