I have no experience with them, but I did want to clarify that affidability = reliability, not a misspelled version of affordability. Not a very common word IME, and hopefully this comment is helpful for those reading rather than pedantic.

I've no firsthand experience of either, but a good friend has the Neve 8816 and has had a lot of issues with it. That's just one data point, of course - and he does love the sound.

The AMS 8816 is a piece of crap, I would advise you to stay away from it.
