I have been removing and replacing capacitors and opamps and i notice that the PCB I work on is dual layer, the original board soldering must have used some flow soldering and the solder is on both sides of the pcb holes. This has made it really hard work removing the ICs and now I worry as I am using a trusty soldering iron that some components are not even connected on one side of the pcb (because the original flow solder has flowed and soldered both sides of the pads on the holes. I am a novice really and wonder if this is a potential problem? Obviously I cannot get to solder under say for example an electrolytic capacitor on the component side. Have I screwed up? am I making sense, am I worrying for nothing?

Depends on the board design. Most if not all quality boards have metal connecting the 2 sides of the PCB. If your board doesn't have these "plated through holes" then you will probably try to reflow some solder on the component side of the PCB best you can...

wait wait sorry. I mis read your post. Your asking is it ok that there is solder on both sides of you pcb?? yes that is fine. that is how PCBs are designed...and if for some reason the top and the bottem layer shouldn'ed be connected at a component pin, their woudn't be any metal on the top side.

Have you tested it yet?

Good job Pentium doesn't have to fault find on a six +layer board with buried vias. :O(

Hi I think you had it right the first time I am worried that the solder has not flowed through to the other side (hard to see under an electrolytic once it's base is flush to the PCB) As you say hopefully they are "plated through holes", it seems like a quality PCB to me
so I hope so. I will try re-heating now I am aware of this. When I work with electronics it is with a sense of excitement, anxiety and stress, sounds weird but it's quite a ride. In the hope of something better on the other side, it is not without it perils though!

Yes I agree...nothing like having a $$$ piece of equipment with XXX hours invested in it, and a hot soldering gun in had!

and Ouch! A 6 layer board with buried vias...sounds scary....
