Hello all,

I just wanted to announce that I started ordering parts for the SSL clone (which I intend to build), and also take a moment to introduce myself. I figured that if I publicly announced my project it would give me a little extra boost of motivation. Although I have never embarked on a project of this size, I did take a year of electronics classes when I was in college (where I built many smaller things). I have also had to make cables, wire patch bays, and replace parts inside of gear at my work. Henceforth, I am confident in my ability to get things done.

At first I was going to make my own PCBs, but I figured that I might as well start simple, and save that for next time.

I've been reading lots of posts on this board so as to study what I'm getting myself into. Through this I've learned that any question that I could ever dream of asking has already been asked about 5 times already. Therefore, you probably won't hear a peep out of me for a while, since I'll just be looking at old posts when I need help.

I can't wait untill my parts arrive. I also can't wait to hear the damn thing. I have 2 SSL consoles (a G and a J) and an X-Logic strip at my disposal to compare the thing to when I'm done. :thumb:

Wish me luck,
Sean

Welcome Sean!

Bear in mind that the Xlogic strip (assuming you mean channel strip) is NOTHING like the SSL buss comp. (feed-forward versus Feed-back, totally different different sensing and sidechain, only one VCA and that's just the start! )

The buss comp on the J series console uses differential VCAs whereas the G-series uses single VCAs in the signal path. Interestingly, I always assumed that the later SSL outboard buss comps would use differential VCAs since the J sounds so much better than the G, but SSL never seemes to do this...

You'll also notice that the G has make-up gain, and that the J has "make-down" as well as "make-up".

The GSSL clone is probably the best thing to start with, and -apart from some difference in the inter-channel-detection, the same as the console version. The Gyraf version will work "better" (Subjective I know, but it's how I see it) than the console original in terms of compressing signals which are louder by virtue of being in both channels at a high level (and therefore sound louder) whereas the console version works on a "loudest-channel-only" basis and works well for broadcast and absolute delivery limit reasons, though Jakob's Gyraf version is more 'musical' to my ears.

There's a place for all of them, yes the Gyraf version is a little different; yes, often the Gyraf version is the version you'll probably prefer. Jakob did an excellent job. :thumb:

Thanks everyone for all the kind words, encouragement, and whatnot. I'll keep ya posted.

New York Dave: that symbol is what is known as a "chaos cross" or a "sigil of chaos". Although it originally had something to do with the early Chaos Magick scene in the UK (in particular with the organization the Illuminates of Thanateros), it later became associated with punk culture sometime in the mid '80s for reasons unknown to me. For what its worth, I nabbed the image off of the Coil Webpage.

Cheers,
Sean

Yeah, that makes sense. We got the idea from the "Elric" novels, which the singer and I were both reading at the time we started the band (early '80s). But that's as close as we ever came to swords 'n sorcery--it was a hardcore punk band. :green:

PS: Where are ya in B'klyn? I'm a Bushwick native :thumb: Your writing style leads me to believe that you were born elsewhere, though

Welcome aboard Sean!

Glad to read the post, Reading the topic made me feel like somebody was getting sued or something. What a relief.

You got me. I grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts (and yes, I am a Red Sox fan). I now live in Greenpoint, and I love it (been living in New York for 6 years now). The rent is super cheap (I can pay my rent off of an assistant engineer's salary), it's a nice neighborhood, and my place is huge.
I used to play in Hardcore punk bands too.
But I digress, this is getting way off topic.
Any recommendations of good place in the city to get stuff like vintage meters (I can find the resistors and capacitors easily enough)

Come on Dave, what was the name of the band???

Cool. That's not too far from my apartment.
My session tonight just got cancelled.
Maybe I'll go check it out.

Thanks.

Geez!

With a title like that I though that this thread was some cease and desist letter!

Hehe...welcome.
