First off this is a request. I would like to know the best places to get knobs for our DIY at resonable prices with a good selection. Also, where small quantities may be ordered. Secondly, This question poped into my mind but it doesn't deserve it's own thread so i am putting it here: What is the model and microphone manufacturer with the largest diaphram diameter/area? Why are many diaphrams I see "so" small in surface area. Is there a direct correlation between the size of a diaphram and the quality of the sound? I say "so" because perhaps they really aren't.

I tend to think that Digikey, Allied, Newark, etc all have fairly good selections of knobs. And I don't think the prices are bad. And you don't have to buy huge quantities.

6$ a knob at digikey, mouser and newark isn't bad? that would mean i have to spend 260$ just on knobs alone for all my projects. the knobs for my GSSLs would then make up 30% of the total price for the box!

Loads of cool knobs here;

Pearl mics have pretty large membranes. Old skool carbon mics sometimes had large ones as well. I've used 15" loudspeakers as microphones, does that count? :razz:

If you want machined aluminium knobs, then you're gong to pay more. But Mouser, for excample, has lots of knobs for $1 and under, and more in the $2-$3 area too.

The other places, I'll admit are more. I should have looked through the catalogs before posting.

Plus I was thinking about people like me who only do one project at a time. Can't imagine having the money do do that many project. heh

There is a strict physical limit to how large you can make a microphone capsule without running into acoustic phase cancelling from one end to another.

On the other hand, you will want as large an area as possible for high output/low noise.

The best compromise is around 22-25mm dia.

before ordering from ampwares.com, go to ax84.com/bbs, 18watt.com and ampage.org and do a forum search on them...
