Our own member Larry Janus, aka Larrchild, was quoted in the latest Mix magazine in Eddie Cilletti's Tech Files column. Included is a screenshot of a tube curve tracer used to match pairs of 6BA6 tubes to the characteristic curves of the 6386 for Larry's recreation of the Fairchild 670. If you haven't already checked out Larry's SR71 comp, see his company's website.

It looks from the front page like Larry is developing a microphone preamp design that he started with input on the Drawing Board here. Very cool!

Congrats Larry! We miss your contributions as of late.

I see now, the curvetracer shot was simply reprinted from a page on the Tube Equip website:

I've tried both setup's in my sta-level. 6386 and dual 6ba6's. (thank you Dale :) ..My 6386 isn't the best, so the dual 6ba6's seemed to be able to handle more gain reduction, while remaining punchy and clean.

For proper comparison, you would have to have a really good 6386 (balanced) and it's type replacement, the dual tubes. Either way, they both work and sound very good.

Yeah, I've got a bag of 6AB6 sitting here to do the same substitution. Larrchild discussed all this in many of the old vari-mu threads, searchable on this forum. He was certainly a valued contributor on the topic.
