I have a little bit of timing hesitancy when I'm playing with live monitoring enabled (DAW software) and hearing the performance with a little bit of latency in my cans. I don't remember this struggle when I've recorded in the studio (ADATs, Tape, etc).

I think maybe the solution is to install a 1/4" output for a phones mixer in my preamp(s). However, I don't want to load the mic pre signal down with headphone mixer input stage impedances.

Would a good way to do this be an FET somewhere before the line driver/later gain stages? I would think this would work without much noticeable effect since an FET has a high input impedance.

I suppose if the headphone mixer had a FET input I wouldn't need one in the pre, and could just take signal from a choice location without much effect. Is this correct?

You should instead take a signal directly from the preamp output. Whatever your preamp is, it will have low enough output impedance to drive the headphone mixer high impedance input, and the other piece of equipment it's already driving. Just drill another hole to the preamp back panel, wire the 1/4" jack and you're good to go. Or build some external little box for the task.
