Hi Group:

Does any one know what type (brand) of red Varnish/Shellac was used on the LO 1166/A.? I know different types have a varying effect on the stray capacitance. It looks like the type used on some military transformers.
Also I can't seem to find any mounting channel brackets.
Any ideas?

iirc edanderson did some experiments with glyptal coating and found it did not really make a difference

you have to pull a vacuum on the varnish tank in order to get it into the windings.
Air bubbles expand under vacuum, then as the vacuum is realeased, they contract, sucking in the varnish as they do so. If you pull 10 ATM's then you suck in ten times the varnish as the bubble had air.
Clever, ehh?

It looks like typical varnich to me, with some red coloring.
The solvent might have changed over the years due to enviro laws.

I have a way pre heat them and pull a vacuum. I need to figure out
how to measure the vacuum though. I'm using an old 5 gal paint pressure
pot and a shop vac.

that sounds cool.
put your palm on the vac fitting, and open the valve.
If your hand makes a nice "pop" sound when you remove it, and it turns beet red with a pipe indentation that lasts for 10.3 seconds, then you have about 588 millibars of merc, dude.
