I just checked it and there's a bunch of emails in there still but lots are missing. Super weird. I set up a backup service for the emails a while ago but I'm not sure how to restore them. Does anyone know what happen?

I believe there is a backup gmail account (groupdiy2) for this reason... The password is different, so that the same bone-head that deleted a bunch of stuff can't delete it off the backup...

When you email stuff to the gdiy account, make sure to email a copy to the backup as well.

ben, can you just just send them to the email again, and send them to the other account as well?

well, after I wrote that, I figured out it would be quite a PITA.... but it should be possible to simply restore using an IMAP client.

This may have been a simple mistake: for example, someone using a POP3 email client set to delete messages after download.  Anyway, from the looks of things people do use POP3/IMAP to access the gmail account so there are copies of the emails out there, I guess it's just a matter of time before someone figures out how to restore them from their computer.

Just make sure you save the 54 messages that are online now so we don't delete those in the process.

I can always resend. Speaking of storage and space... anyone know so good easy to access hosting for files... Something in the free or close to free, WOuld love to host all my schematics online.

So the next question is: WHO has the password for the groupdiy2 account??

It's been too long since it was set up, and I don't remember who actually did it...?!?

.. And I was under the impression that pop/imap did NOT delete messages from Gmail - I know that my account does not anyway, and I haven't set anything up specially for that..??

It works ! I tired and I see all mails!

EDIT ; Not at all :(

all schemas I've posted were missing.( mostly b-stuff)
I saved all interesting stuff on my hd (+of course all stuff that i saved in gmail..)
but hopefully whole account could be returned!

just to confirm, the gdiy mail account indeed does have permanently deleted mails. The good news is i found all of them but i'm not sure if i should post publicly where i found them. The place i found them it is not possible to delete them again but it's still only possible to restore the emails on a per mail basis.

might it be time for a filezilla server with someone anonymously moderating the files. So a semi public server where everyone who logs in only has read-only privilges and a new email account for mailing the schematics and such to the moderator?

greetings,

Thomas

What we could do  to prevent this happening in the future, is to automatically forward the incoming emails to another Gmail account.

Only the creator of the second Gmail account will have the password, so no one will be able to access it except the creator.

Low tech, but I do it all the time.

Peter
