I just got my Lundahls in the mail, and casually tried to fit it onto the 1176 boards I got from MNats, and they wouldn't go in at all. I think the pins on the tranformers are fatter than the hole. Is it okay to drill it out a bit, or am I doing something wrong? Should I take some precautions to avoid blowing out the solder pad on the back?

Thanks.

Hey, maybe we should start an MNats board stuffing thread?

Yep,

Just drill them. When enlarging a PCB hole, it often helps to drill through from the track-side to stop the drill pushing through the final mm and ripping the pad off.

I keep a "pin vice" nearby when stuffing boards:

...if you pop a 0.8/1/1.2mm drill bit in the chuck, you can enlarge holes by hand- this way you can get more control over the enlarging. Plus it's handy when away from the workshop and you need to enlarge a hole during a repair.

Have fun with your 1176!

Mark

Sorry, the holes were just a bit too small (no pun intended). You can just drill them out to fit. A sharp drill should go through cleanly without disturbing the pads.

The next batch will have the Lundahl holes the correct size. The OEPs fit fine though as should all the other components.

I think it's been agreed that this kind of thread should stay in the Black Market where there is already a thread for my boards.

Thanks you guys, and no need to apologize MNats. You did a beautiful job and made something really cool. My OEP's are on the way, so they should fit quite nicely. I decided to make a clean one and a dirty one.

Thanks again!

Arrigotti,

Where did you get your OEPs??

So far the only place I've found that carries them is a British shoppe that doesn't cater to Americans. (Canford I think?)

Newark. Good alternative to the LL's, considering the price!

Peace,
Al.

I ordered the OEP's from Newark. They are about 2 weeks back ordered, but I figured I'd just order them, and gather up everything else. I got 2 sets since they were so cheap even though I have a set of Lundahls and well. Maybe I'll end up making 2 of each, or use the 2nd set of OEP's for a G9 preamp.

I ordered the OEPs (A3E & A2E) from RS last week and just got a note that my order is ready for collecting without any additional remarks - so I figure they're added.

This is the Netherlands though and I understood RS ships from the UK.

I have no idea, is there a RS over there as well ?

Good idea. I have a mnats board stuffing faq going on in the back of my brain I will publish here.

A question - is the hole size a problem for both the input AND output Lundahls??

I was plannning to use Lundahl input and OEP output guessing that would be the best sounding combination.

I guess I'm going to have to learn to use the dremel tool... :)

Peter, I don't know what 'RS' is.
You're not talking about 'radio shack' i assume? (!?)

PS - I just found Newark.com thanks to this thread. The OEPs are OUT OF STOCK (as has been mentioned already) with a backorder time of 19 days!

I added myself to the wait list. They're only $20 each - which for transformers I guess is pretty cheap.

I just ordered the OEP inputs and then saw this thread:

We're in the same boat

But don't worry, that A262A3E will be useful for other projects.
It's just that I have to get me another A262A2E - or try the 5532-input section first.

Mnats, did you try the A262A3E yourself ? There's the suggestion for a direct micpre-input which seems to make sense, but did anyone try this yet ?

Yes, sorry about that. They only have to go up a fraction in size though. I did it with a drill bit in a hand-held pencil-shaped chuck - no need to pull out the power tools.

The OEP as-microphone-input was someone else's idea which I decided to add to the board. When I was re-designing the G1176 board I asked at the old Tech-Talk what features people thought would be good to add. That was one of the suggestions, so I nested the OEP inside the Lundahl footprint. It was a last-minute decision to add it and not as important to me as getting rid of the hum and reversing the output transformer for more gain.

I've never tried it myself. The OEPs that seem to sell for $20 US cost about $80 Australian dollars here from RS!

I think someone did try this recently. And whoever suggested it back at the old TT forum presumably tried it. Maybe someone will come forward.

The OEP as-microphone-input

Thanks Mnats, no problem here, that A262A3E will find good use in another project some day.
Or since it's been ordered anyway I'll just add it just to see what it does - maybe with both primaries in // and/or with the G9-line-pad-circuit in front.

FWIW, here in NL they do EU19 each (incl. tax) and EU7.5 for the shielding can. With todays EUvsUS$ that'll be something like US$15 & US$6.

Bye,

Peter
