when it was klein and hummel pre neumann they definitely would not have made such compromises, I think it was one of the things the bean counters did at sennheiser owned neumann, when they bought out K+H.
Well, actually, my K+H o100s (the 2001 brother of the KH120) does make some weird noises, but I guess any amp could after 20 years.
The killer amps from the KH120As are a well known problem though.

I have been considering the passive O100 to replace the KH120, but they don't come up for sale often.

I have recently taken a Pioneer SX-750 out of storage, it's probably around 50 years old and it has never been turned on in 20+ years, it worked well straight off the bat. No problem at all with capacitors.
Most modern manufacturers just have a different mentality these days, bean counters as somebody pointed earlier.

IMHO the KH120 is one of the very few pieces of modern gear I have and it's been so far the most unreliable and less service-friendly of them all.
I would be curious to know if the MK2 version is any better...
