Its hard to tell what capsule it is , it kind of looks like a superlux capsule but I can't realy tell.

yeah I agree one ugly mic
I can't ,for the world, figure out why someone would go through the trouble to make a mic and then crap out on the style.
shure did this with their KSM line of mics and I hated it.
I really don't like the sound of those KSM's either...they sound brittle to me
this new mic might sound good but for the same money I can get one that looks good too.
In the studio atmosphere counts just as much as the gear if not more.
some great recording have been made on mid-grade gear that is great because of the feel that was there.
It seems to be backwards too ... the cheaper the mic is inside ...the better it should attempt to look on the outside....don't ya think...hmmmm
but I'm happy to have the info... thanks gus

I don't think it looks too bad. At least it's very neutral. Through the grill the capsule looks to be 797 (white teflon rim?)? Who knows, my Blue Cactus capsule has a white rim as well.

Here's a 797 capsule from my Nady SCM-1000 mic:

$1000 seems a little steep to me, unless there is something special hidden behind that grille. I really expected this mic to retail at $699. That being said, if I couldn't make one of these myself for $250, I'd gladly pay the $1000. I made two royer/mojave's and they are among my favorite vocal mics at any price. The royer circuit for this mic is extremely distinctive and colorful, to the point that I might even say that it has more influence over the mic's tone than the capsule. I tried a few different capsules in my mics and all had that same type of "amp-like" sound.

Hmmm!
$1,000 for a cardioid only tube mic.
Hmmmm...
Grille looks a bit wonky too.
Would be very interested to hear some reports on how
it sounds though as he has a lot of well earned respect.
I still think that for that money you should have the option
on at least another pattern though.

I was not negative with my post. I don't understand the negative posts.

You have the option of not buying it. I know I would like to hear it. I believe David Royer know a few things about microphones. The grill looks like it "sound" good. A good transformer costs some money.

True. If Royer hadn't shared the circuit I doubt that anyone would bat an eye at the price.
Well, not everybody can be a DIYer. This is for the folks who want this as a solution now.
I agree. Given Royer's background I'd say it's safe to assume that you'd be buying a mic that is guaranteed to sound good. He's probably paying for higher quality control in the manufacturing side of this as well.

Let's face it, we've all become very spoiled. We can buy items that are very good in quality for next to nothing now (e.g. Fum's ribbon mic for $109!!!). When you want excellent quality, though, you still have to pay for it...unless you have the skills to build your own.

yeah it looks a bit better up close and I guess not everyone CAN be a DIY'er so it could be cool.....and maybe there is a lot of headroom on the price and if you actully forge a deal for one you might get it cheaper..maybe $800 now that would be cool..and i would like to hear it too ..that will tell the whole story. it just seems like with the current market they would try to be a bit more competitive. I'm sure they did their homework and ther must be something here in the sound worth checking out. I wonder if my local Sam Ass or Guitar Splinter has these...I'll have to check.

PS ok sorry .....S*am A*sh....and ...G*uitar C*enter ....hehe

I wonder if that mic is made in america, that kinda is a deal breaker at that price if its not. Does anyone know?

dave

good luck trying to find that at the local banjo center. David royer funally turned the mic into a production line VS a DIY project. You can still get the DIY project version for much cheaper. I would imagine it sounds good otherwise I doubt dave would put it out...

I think it's just a production version of the kit they were selling. I had heard rumors that they were coming out with this.

The capsule is Taiwanese. I have one at the shop. It is your basic K67 style backplate with what looks to be P20 injection molded diaphragm rings. Like the Shanghai 32mm cap, the membrane is not glued. This capsule can be found in the Groove Tubes mics, which have always sounded pretty good to me, although I have not recorded with them, per se...
I spoke with Dave about this line back at the AES show. He has some other stuff in the works as well.
