Old Growth Timber

I started renovating my house and my woodworking shop where I build my guitars this week using old growth pine which has been reclaimed from the bottom of the Ottawa River. :shock:

Being a luthier, I love wood....and when I heard about this stuff I had to check it out. Let me tell ya, this pine is breathtaking! It's beautiful and since it's old growth (meaning that it was cut down when the forest was virgin and trees grew slowly because there was a dense canopy) it's way more dense and resistant to dents than any pine you can buy today.
It'll probably take me a couple of more weeks to finish, and I'll post some photos then.

Yeah,... I was told that the old gtrs and amps were made from naturally pressure treated wood. now they chemically pressur treat. logs under water for 40 years was standard.

I saw on the news several years ago that they were getting more than $100k per log.

yeah it's about 3 times the price
I just got off the phone with the supplier in Ottawa, they're going to mill a custom mantle for the fireplace. Same stuff, reclaimed pine but I'm going to have them mill it so to leave the front edge natural (cambium layer) which is what you see if you pull the bark off....should be pretty cool! :thumb:

OK finally got the floor and the stairs done...what a huge and dirty job that was!(cause the wood just came raw...I had to sand, stain and finish too).... I was on my hands and knees for 3 weeks, my back is killing me!

Oh Yeah,
I forgot to mention.... when it came time to sand the wood I rented two different floor sanders (the big ones that stand up and you push them around) Well, naturally I sanded some test pieces first and everything looked good until I stained the test pieces....the results were horrific!
dark squiggly lines everywhere, it looked like pubic hair all over! :shock:
One of the machines was better but still unacceptable.
Now for the amusing part....I ended up sanding the whole thing with my little Makita random orbit palm sander! LOL :green:
It took almost 3 days!
The people at the local harware store where I rented the 2 sanders think I'm totally nuts :wink:

Super cool. Congrats! I did my floors two years ago with engineered wood (since I'm on a concrete slab). I would have loved to do something like yours. The colors remind me of the 100 yr old old-growth pine I had in my last house.
