Hey, recently i bought old mixer produced in 1967 in Zurich by Leonhard. It was in very good condition, even with documentation, but something stupid steal all tubes, and some of modules. All tubes are E188CC, to bye original - is very expensive. May i replace this one, by more inexpensive modern tubes

Hi,

I have exactly the same desk it has 12 tube micchannels. Indeed the tubes are very expensive. ECC188 are very high quality though and have approximately 10.000 hours of live on them in average. Nos tubes go for around 50 USD a piece if you try to do a litlle souring. The desk itself is truly amaizing and it looks vintage as hell. Each channel uses 2 tubes. there are replacement tubes for sure. Do a search for the ECC188 and you'll find a replacement really soon. it's not the same though... but I guess it will still be nice.

With regard to the desk there were very few made. The man who designed the modules was also a mojor designer for EMT. For a tubedesk noiselevels are really really low, and driving it a little over the top gives a really nice saturationeffect.

With regard to the tube i'm allways on the lookout to find NOS tubes but indeed they are expensive. The telefunken diamants are the best version, but Philips, siemens and even SG made versions with the same characteristics. If anyone want's me to host pictures of my desk, I'm more then willing to send some very detailed pictures of it.

Regards,

Geert

PS: Sovtek 6922's can be used as an alternative, also 7308 can be used

(6ES8 = ECC189 = E189CC (Low noise dual UHF triode, almost similar to ECC188)

The E188CC / 7308 tubes are the special matched section, low noise and microphonics version of the E88CC/6922.

Hi, Geert. Thanks a lot. It's a good news.
Until this moment I was in doubd - to repare this pult, or disassemble them, and make some preamps. Now, i think, that I'll try to repare it. One problem (tubes) I'll solve with Russian valves military 6N23P( analog E88CC) in output cascades, and original E188CC in inputs, this makes procedure not so expensive, but I don't know, how to solve another problem - absence of some channels.
Must be:
320-12 pcs.
362-2 pcs.
372-2 pcs.
310-4 pcs.
instead of it I have:
322- 1
361- 2
320- 5
310- 3
313- 2
362-3
Among servise parts, there are three complete set, for assembling 320 amplifiers, a lot of front panels (new) , but no any parts for cases.

Hi Valery,

In my desk I have only 320 channels. They are the best version. they have the possibility of echo send as well as high and low frequency chelving. They sold for 1175 swiss franks a piece in 1963.

I also advise to repare the desk. When I bought it I had the chance to AB it with telefunken tubedesk and well the Leonard was perfectly on par and with regard to maintenance is a hell of a lot easier to figure out. The 310 is usually used as a bussunit. The 372 is a very very very very nice eq module... these are the real gems of this desk. I use them on vox all the time I link them both togeter though as they just give one frequency per channel. Hold on to them with your life

Recapping is a good idea, and better do that before changing the tubes. I paid around 2000 euro for the nos tubes  . The tubes that came with the desk were in good condition so I have a lot of sparetubes now. I'm not going to sell them though as this desk represents a pretty important part of my setup and keeping spares around is a vital part in using this kind of equipment.

I have seen one of these desks go for 13.500 euro's and thats approximately the price for it. Hope you did a better deal, but it's good deal anyway.

The cases are not that hard to make but they are thought out really well with servicing in mind.

Litlle hint..... try it with a submix for drums...... you'll be truly amazed.

Geert

PS: Tillman, I'll send the pictures tonight so that eveyone can drool....

Hi, Geert.
Recapping is a good idea, but I don't understand what to recap - if electrolitic - I find it only one per channel, indeed polystyren?
It's a pity, that I have no any 372, but instead I have two, (two channel each) external device 915, it seems to be equivalent.
Exept of it all, there was two external bloks - one, external power suply, another four amplifieres 15watt each (520), four amplifiers 4 watt each (580), and two logarithmic amplifiers (510).

That desk looks nice....

Here are some tubes:

(6ES8 = ECC189 = E189CC (Low noise dual UHF triode, almost similar
to ECC188)

Definitely not!

The ECC189 is a remote-cutoff triode, where the ECC188 is a sharp-cutoff
ditto. Very different. Substitute 188 with 189, and you'll get quite a lot of
unlinearity (distortion). Not recommended.

In early 90'es there was a problem with 189's renamed (counterfeit'ed) as
88's - made a whole lotta trouble for the audio community.

Try looking up the article "the suitability of the 6dj8 for audio" - it's a
classic on the topic.

Hello,

The one on the CML site is actually the one I have bought  It has been restored but I bought a big batch of NOS tubes for it.

I'll send the porn tonight, my working schedule is too hectic.

Greets,

Geert

CML has been trying to sell that mixer for years now. They've actually come down in price quite a bit. I've seen it as high as like ?13,000 and then around ?9,000. It's getting more reasonable now, it seems.

Geert, that's the same one, huh? CAN'T WAIT to see the pics! Send 'em on over!

And Velery, you beat me to the punch! I will post full size versions of your pics when Geert sends me his to post and then everyone can see them, large as life.

Cheers,

T

So here's the full size porn for both consoles for all who are interested. Each file is 2MB and change. I highly suggest the download:

Geert, that's as cool as any desk I've laid my hands on or seen in pictures. I actually sold a Neumann custom 12 channel mixer with 12- V476B's and 12- W491A's, 4 groups, 2 aux's, routing to boot, correlation meter, RTW master meters, Swank talkbalk with the KM83 capsule, plus the swank active stereo faders with the Haufe input and output transformers, etc, etc- serial number on the console was 001!!! Too bad I couldn't keep it for myself but money was rough at the time, but I sold it to a friend, so I may have my day again.

Hi,

Thx for your comments on the desk. Must have been hartbreaking to sell the neumanndesk. I also have a comparable story. I had two NOS fairchild tube compressors, but wanted to finance something different so I sold them with tears in my eyes. They had the same schematics as the 660  I still have a lot of pictures of those units though. They were made for broadcast and it had the name "automatic gain controller model C or something". Anyway if you want some porn of those units I could send them to you as well.

Anyway, thx for hosting.

Geert

This reminds me when I had to sell my 1964 Gibson Thunderbird IV. It was metallic green which was a custom color. So to say one of a kind. At this moment I swor to myself never to give a bass away anymore. Sometimes poverty sucks.
