Got a 400F very cheap on eBay, and no surprise, without the now unobtainable Control software I can't change the previous owners usless-to-me routing. Plus theres a nasty digital hash bleeding into a couple of the mic pres.

So, having little to lose, I threw caution to the wind and sawed the board in half, leaving only the 4 mic pres. To power it, I installed two DC jacks into two of the now-empty TRS jack holes wired in series, then to a simple resistor +/- splitter. Power supplied by two Talent cell 12v rechargeable power banks.

For phantom, there's room on a big empty space on the board between the XLRs and the front panel controls for five NiMh 9v batteries.

Outputs simply taken from the four Insert jacks. Works great; all four pres are dead silent after dumping the switching supply and digi circuitry. Only thing not working are the level LEDs which are run from a couple of 5v powered ICs; when the 7205 reg arrives, I can tap off one of the phantom's batts to it.

All that's left after the LEDs get their 5v is to cut down the enclosure.

I also replaced the glitsy chrome-plated TRS nuts with black ones.

________

New life as a handsome, compact, battery-powered mic pre.
