I'm trying to find more information on how to build such a device.  This would be very handy for our stage projection show!  This video was part of this guys thesis:http://johnnylee.net/projects/thesis/ but I don't see any information on how to actually build such a device.  Any ideas??

The hardware looks simple... An arduino  and some photodiodes would do the trick there...

I like how they do the black and white strips to see where the sensors are. Very very smart.
 
No I'm not a software genius, but that scanning technique is very common for video mapping, this is just the first time I've seen it used with sensors-usually people use DSLR cameras....
