I'm doing some experiments on a well known compressor over here...
And i;m using the THAT1646 as balancer and probably as make up gain....

My question is how do i make the output variable? right now its it too loud...
Should i use a potentiometer just before the THAT1646??
Thanks.

1646 adds 6dB of gain IIRC, how about just a simple voltage divider with a pair of
matched 10k resistors to get 3dB ? ( after the 1646 )
To make it variable with a pot, it would have to be a decent conductive plastic type and
sealed I would say.

Those balanced driver chips usually require low source impedance (like op-amp output) to work properly.

The 1600 series THAT chips can be used with any medium impedance source. The only effect is the overall gain decreases.  Their input impedance is 5k, so you could use a 10k pot with less than 3dB gain error at mid-rotation.

Roger Foote reports being unhappy with the sound of the 1646 with source Z of more than 2K5, regardless of what the spec sheet says.
