does anyone have a lead on any sources for the neve RAF blue/gray? or anything close?

model paint? automotive paint?

i thought about going to home depot and getting them to mix up a custom based on a sample of a scanned pannel...but i'm not sure if i could get the finish to look right.

thoughts?

Most automotive paint stores or body shops have vast "chipbooks" to look through. DuPont alone is enough to keep you busy.

Hi Al,

Check out here

I'd be interested to know how you make out - I thought about the same thing but I just haven't had time to pursue it.

To quote Geoff Tanner of Aurora Audio:
Back at the Neve factory major changes had taken place with a complete re-styling of the product range into "New Appearance Design" (NAD). The RAF Blue Grey paint work was replaced with (RAF) Extra Dark Sea Grey

Geoff Tanner http://www.auroraaudio.net might have an exact match for the EDSG paint. I know Geoff and Freddy from Ocean Studios Burbank http://www.oceanstudiosburbank.com went through an exhaustive search for the "right" paint to repaint their rather custom 80 series Neve.

Damn, they only had a ****** 8108 the last time I worked there. If you haven't seen Ocean Burbank, it's one hell of a nice studio!

yes, i remember reading about the install of the joint 80series. quite a project. and quite a patchbay!!!

thanks for the tip i'll check it out. although this isn't for a restoration project so an exact match is not critical. it's just for a control panel to be mounted next to some modules, so if the color is a cµnt hair off it's no big deal.

thanks guys.

Digging up this old thread - I found the answer whislt searching for something else...

According to this web site - the colour Extra Dark Sea Grey has a Pantone equivelant of Pantone 432

Maybe this will help....maybe it will confuse!

http://home.mchsi.com/~pshuntley/fscodes/fs595b-1000.html

The Federal Stardards (FS 595b) are a good place to start. Most commercial paint shops in the U.S. reference these numbers. The U.K has a completely different set of numbers. The color is only a small part of the selection process. The % of gloss really affects the overall look of commerial paint.

To make matters even more complicated, looking at colors on a uncalibrated computer monitor make it hard to know what a painted surface really looks like. Always get a painted test sample.

Is it just the pictures I see, or do ElaM 251's have a kind of "minty" tint? Anyone got a color match for that?

Bear

ive seen it minty washed out ( i think old) to almost a tint of lime green.
