Hi Guys...

Greeting from Jakarta, Indonesia and this is my first post

I found this product

http://baeaudio.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=37&Itemid=25

and I am really interested with the idea for using this as A character box for ouput on the master bus on my DAW to be record back . I know this product was meant as line mixer to combine multiple output into one output.

Is there any design out there that can be done DIY to achieve certain character? To liven up the mix?

here's the inside of it

what do you think guys?

Search this forum for passive mixers , then you have the option
of using different micpres for makeup gain which you will need
anyway.  you may get some more " sound ' from the transformer
if you drive it harder , which may be harder to do with signals
already attenuated through the passive network , but thats where
different preamps " of color "  can be added as you please

490$  Jeeeez

You can do a 4 x 1 - same method - even have it wired for 2 X 1 either/or with a single transformer at a fraction of the cost.  I just more or less built one as part of a larger project.

Hi Gemini,

Thanks,

The passive section and output amp which includes the section that's similar to the BAE box cost around 275.00 total parts.  This figure could certainly go lower or higher depending on what parts you decide to use . To just build the coil mixing section for 2 to 4 inputs could probably be done for around 75 - 85.00 depending on what you have to spend on the transformer.

The preamps section probably cost ~ 400.00 roughly based on current market value of many of the parts which I had collected over a period of several years.

This site is filled with character circuits!  A passive transformer mixer like the BAE box and the 4ch project are good for mixing, but if you just wanted some character try a single (per channel) 600:600 transformer from Carnhill, Souter, Edcor, etc for character as you do not need a mixer.  That would involve no active electronics.  There are posts here with just those projects.
If you want to go "active", consider an API 325 line amp circuit, Mark B. can help me here with a product I am sure, or get one of the Neve 283 boards and populate just the output half.  Both examples will involve $100 apiece for two input and two output transformers, but you get into some circuit building as well.
If you wanted something off the shelf, consider a cheapo tube mic pre, and either pad the input (circuits available everywhere for "pads") or get into the guts and add your own input transformer for line input.  Once you go DIY anything goes.  Just be careful with tube circuits.  That tube mixer can kill a lesser person than lasso!
