Once, I had a bad experience with a comparable Chinese R-core transformer. During a couple of weeks the transformer was doing fine , then it suddenly burned without identifiable reason. I simply replaced it with a toroidal transformer. Now, many years later, the preamp is still running without problems. No more cheap R-core transformers for me...

R-core xfmr is a mature technology.
I also had problems with toroidals.
Indeed there are lemons everywhere.
