I was wondering where a good source for rack cases is in the USA? I need a couple of 3u cases that are at least 5 1/2" deep but no more than 7" deep, preferably steel. Thanks!

So, in the U.S. rack cases magically appear to everyone except me? 28 looks at this topic with no answers? What gives? Where can I get cases in the States?

Par-Metal.... though to me the quality hasn't been as good lately. To be exact, everything is fine except the front panel cutout. I'm thinking on my next build I'll just get Front Panel Express to do the entire front panel. I'll just have to deal with the non-anodized edge.

Yes.

Peace,
Al.

Well, you asked for a specific (and not common) range of depths. If you could be more flexible on this you'd get more responses. Searching is also generally a good thing.

Yeah, I tried searching, but didn't turn up anything useful. I was really just looking for ANY places stateside that sold cases as a start. I heard about Par Metal but I also heard the same thing that one of you guys said, that the quality is not what it used to be. Are shallow cases really that weird? I may have to just use one of those Hammond cases that are a little too shallow and put some kind of spacer on the front. I am mounting some Akai M7 reel to reel tube amps into an old Otari MX-7308 cabinet that I have left over after parting it out. Its pretty shallow so the deep boxes don't fit. Anyway, thanks for all your help.

Bud and LMB-Heeger sell these aluminum panel chassis that are only about 5.25" deep. You'll need to buy the top/bottom covers and front panel separately, though.

LMB-Heeger

Prices may be better if you buy through a dealer, like Mouser...

Just to be clear on my comments... I've only had problems with the front panel. I've had no problems with the rest of the chassis.

That's so weird that they define LxWxH with the box laying on it's back. It seems so counter-intuitive.

What I would call the height, they call the depth. What I would call the width, they call the length.

There's probably a perfectly valid reason from a manufacturing standpoint, but I'm sure it made a few people furrow their brow.

Wow, thanks, that actually exactly what I'm looking for. I was going to have a shop cut the front panels anyway so I'll just get hem to fab the whole thing out of sheet stock, top and bottom covers too. This chassis is the hard part. Awesome, thanks so much guys. I will take some pics when these pres are done.
