I wanted to change out the 5U4 in my Precise 111 tube tester for silicon. The arrangement is a little weird, and I wasn't sure if it could be done. I attached a schematic fragment. Thanks for your advice.
I think the way those work is that they connect the cathodes of two diodes to the two cathode connections and then tie the anodes to one plate connection or the other, which I'm not sure would work with my center-tap output scenario. That is what I wondering about.

We started doing this back in the '60s when the first ones became available.
Just make sure you check the output voltage of a properly working tube in the working circuit and use a power dropping resistor(s) if necessary to match it.
