I don't know of a time where I've ever preferred the sound of a 57 to a 201, BUT the 201's relative fragility and steep repair costs have really soured me on both that model and Beyer's as a whole. At first I thought I was just unlucky or I somehow missed an errant whack, drop, etc. Each time I've inquired about fixing it, I was told $200 as a blanket cost for replacing just the cartridge, $140 + $60 labor to solder two wires. If you look around online, you'll see the mic advertised online from authorized retailers for less! I was (finally) able to buy the part for just $140, but between the costs, service or lack thereof, I can understand why they just sit as a paper weight or get sold for parts. Since documenting the inner part, here is the lower part of the body, a single piece of XLR insert, PCB board, 2 unmarked SMD caps and what I assume is a larger lytic cap. The only marking is K 333 the body. Authorized service center claims they have no knowledge as to the individual components. So if it isn't a blown capsule, seems you are SOL. Most I've seen have a surprising amount of flux slop for tacking on the two 28-ish?AWG wire.
