A friend gave me this mic (Black Label version) to put a standard XLR in it, no problem right? or so I thought. The issue is the mic had the wires to the transformer cut and and the dot piece isn't with it. I assume (bsed on what I've researched so far) that this is the 30/50 - Hi Z version; as there are three wires.

The wire colors are as follows:

Green
Yellow/Lime
White

The current owner wasn't concerned about whether it remained as close to original as possible, but I'm a stickler when it comes to that type of thing, so I fabricated an XLR cable that has the base mount, locking ring nut and female connection. I then added a male XLR connection in the bottom of the transformer tube and all fits nicely.

The problem is, I've not been able to find any info on the wire colors but with some tinkering I got it to work; but I'm a novice with these and not sure it's right.

I put a piece of heat shrink over the end of the green wire, it seemed to be the loudest, so I figured it was the Hi-Z wire. I the connected the white wire to Pin 1 and the Yellow wire to pin 2. I had nasty hum until I connected a ground wire to pin 1, nothing to pin 3 and it worked.

Is this correct? It just doesn't seem right to me.

Thanks in advance,

PD
