It definitely was the pot. Question now is why did it go up in smoke...

Unit is fixed. All new pots (including the guitar-style push/pull input pot from China) and fully recapped (probably clearer sound now, but was to lazy to measure before).

Overall, not sure it was worth it, but... the kids now have a new toy

And for me it's a scraped UHF wireless receiver (by the same maker) -- utterly useless to anyone here, but same type of case
