Hello!

I just picked up a pair of SE2300 Condensers for really cheap.

They both work, but there is an upper-mid harshness to the sound.

They actually remind me of my 414XLS's.

Any ideas on how to tame the harshness?

Capsules? Circuitry?

EQ-ing them just lowers the harshness, but it's still there.

Many thanks!

If that's the case it could be the headbasket. I personally don't like it as it causes reflections too close to the capsule. Remove the headbasket and try to find something more transparent to shield the capsule just for a test. Wider, taller, no wide heavy brackets. See if some of the harshness disappears. You might still need to use eq. Image just for inspiration.

Here's the eq curve typical for taming HF, used in u87. It will go well with the capsule in that mic. Download demo of Voxengo Curve EQ if you don't own it. Load the CSV file into it.

Pictures of both sides of the PCB(s) will help figure out what circuit is used.
