I think i had initially posted in the wrong department.
...Anyone have any ideas as to whaere Ive gone awry?
Ive wired the quarter inch jack to pins 7 and 10 with the ground (from the xlr out (pin1) also attached to pin 7.
On the xlr, I've got pin 2 (xlr) wired to pin 1 on the transformer and pin 3 (xlr) to pin 6 on tge transformer. The ground to the chassis is wired to pin 1 of the transformer. 

transformer pin7  to jack 6.3 gnd and to pin1 on XLR via "ground lift" switch
transformer pin10 to jack 6.3 hot

transformer pin 1 to XLR pin 2
transformer pin 6 to XLR pin 3

the ground of the chassis shouldn't be connected to the transformer pin1
