Does anyone of you have a lead to where I can buy a stack of THAT2180 ic's? A friend of mine is in need, official lead time says perhaps June (!!), and all the usual sources has dried out..

We're talking some 50-100 pcs

Hi Jakob,

if the circuit can accommodate the 2181, Mouser has the SO8 package in stock. It's been my workaround for the past 2-3 months with a small PCB adapter.

Does anyone know what has caused this shortage? Even the clones have been sold out for quite some time...

A year ago I had no trouble to source a bag full of THAT2181A for my console.

COVID-19...

I contacted That Corp in September and here's the response:
"Unfortunately, the Covid-19 situation has placed a number of issues out of our direct control. Our main supplier, located in India, had been completely shut down for several months per government order and has just re-opened. However, the India government has only allowed them to operate at 20% of previous capacity."

Some seem to have stock of coolaudio V2181 as a sip8 part. Just place a 25R between pins 2/4 for a similar result.

You would need to confirm actual availability, but here are two places where you can add them to your cart.

Banzai also seems to have most of the THAT parts including all 3 2180 variants.

Heard on the radio there is a shortage of semiconductors in general.  Supplies are limited so the fab houses are prioritizing their biggest customers,  would imagine audio is far down that list.

The car makers are shutting down US factories briefly due to semiconductor shortages.

Thanks for links and the idea about strapping a resistor across outputs to sim the -2 / -4 dB versions.

May I ask make/reference of the pins? Are they standard tulip sockets? If they are, how do you solder them?

Oh... Now I understand why I don't see a lot of even pretty "common" parts at local distributors.

BTW there is a lot of SOIC 218x in Russia, but only a couple of DIP ones left in the whole country.

Hi abbey,

I found these pin headers on ebay:

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/10Pcs-Gold-Plated-2-54mm-Male-40-Pin-Single-Row-Straight-Round-Pin-Header-Strip/170842982053?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

They fit nicely in IC sockets. Here's how I solder them to the PCB:

No ground plane? I would put ground plane on boths sides with vias to get ground on both sides of pins 1, 2 and 3 and maybe not so much 8.

..we're talking REALLY low impedances around here, I see no reason to complicate this for the DIY'er by groundplaning just-because-we-can..?

Important:

It is now claimed by people-in-the-knows that there is a very real possibility that the THAT chips in SIL-package are not coming back.

Reason being a fallout with the next-last place on earth doing SIL's, somewhere in india
