I've never used original units , but they dont look like any pictures of vintage units I've seen ...

They look just lke these below.  These aren't claimed to be vintage units.  UA still makes, or has made over the years, various versions and combinations of their classic lines.

FWIW, a vintage UREI 2 channel box would be the 1178, like the two shown here:

One disadvantage of the 1178 was the fact that one pair of knobs set the attack and release for both channels at the same time.

And 1178 is IC based (OAs), not discrete like 1176, is a cheap stereo version, not the same electronicaly...

It wasn't any cheaper in the catalog when they were still being made in the late 80's.  I think we may be talking era here.  An older 1176 would be discrete.  I don't know for a fact if the last production model 76s were still discrete but wouldn't be surprised if they were using chips just as the 78s were.  Not sure what you mean by cheap - I would guess the use of chips in the 78 had to do with keeping it in a 2 RU format.  Neither the 76 or 78 used an input transformer in the last run.  They had both been "cheapened" that way, and the consensus at that time as I recall was that transformerless wherever possible was the desired order of the day.
