Hi all.

I just received replacement parts for an SM58. Included in the sale was the top half of the mic, if you like.
The cartridge, ball grill, and metal cartridge housing.

A few things have made me suspect that this item may be a fake, but I wanted to get experienced opinions before I do anything about it.

Here are the things I observed.

It doesn't sound like a 58. It's lacking bass compared with a known genuine mic.

The metal thread is different from a genuine sm58. ( where the transformer/xlr housing would join to the cartridge housing )

The grey foam under the grill is a different colour and slightly different pattern.

The cartridge itself is plastic and hollow. The 'working parts' are very thin and the rest is like a dummy chamber.

I've attached a few photos to see what you think.
Any conformation, or info to the contrary is much appreciated.

Here's the (black) new capsule beside a stripped back genuine sm 56/57/58 cartridge.

This is a (bad) pic of where the 'cartridge' splits in two.
The brass part looks like a standard circuit board riser.
The threaded bar goes right through the hollow chamber, into the brass riser.

This shows the actual cartridge, and the hollow chamber that a real sm cartridge would fully occupy.

No, it was an el-cheapo ebay replacement.

It was bought from an guy like myself. Full positive feedback, mixed sales.
Clearly not a business or scammer.

I planned to strip all the housing and plastics off, then use it as a replacement in an old sm56 with the impedance switch.

EDIT. I should add that these parts weren't sold as new.
This chap used the mic for a period of time and sold these items for spares after his XLR socket or transformer failed.
I can't remember which.

I spoke to the seller and we sorted out the situation without problem.

It's no bad thing to leave the pics up for reference though. I'm sure there are plenty of these floating around.

Thanks.
