Then I'm inclined to assume the unit is rather rare and probably useless by today's standard

I don't think it was very popular back in its time and kind of obscure. Such products were probably more used in broadcasting, than recording or sound reinforcement.

Symetrix used to have d/l links for legacy documentation available by circuitous route on their website. They've revamped their site since then. Have you tried an email query?
