I met Hans Camenzind (designer of the 555 under contract to Signetics) in the 70s when the company I worked for used some semi-custom ICs from his company (Interdesign). The 555 was incredibly popular .

Many years ago when I studied electronics in college our first project was a 555 based circuit which we had to design and etch a pcb for , I technically failed it because I shrunk the pcb down to the size of a small postage stamp , it was still the neatest job in the class by far . In some ways I kinda wish now I'd continued and gone on to technical college or university , still time I suppose . I do like the unstructured learning here , Id say its hard to find even colleges with the combined audio knowledge off all the contributors here .

Finally, a 555 that doesn't require an external driver transistor for high current loads! Looks like it might work well for pulsed current TIG welding. ;)
