Anything out there that does a good job of replacing these ICs?

Thanks,
Aaron

They're in the Trident Trimix I just purchased...I got the thing up and running...and I'm just trying to get some more info on it, maybe some updates, mods...

Thanks,
Aaron

Hi Aaron,

If you do a search for TL072 or TL074 you'll find a lot of threads on this topic.

Good luck.

Could be wrong but I don't think TL072s & TL074s are related to TL071s. I think it's a different IC all together...please correct me if I'm wrong...but I was under the impression that 71s couldn't be replaced by72s or 74s...

they are related because they use the same amps internally but different pinouts because the tl071 is only a single opamp. you are in luck, however because replacements are big upgrades..

5534(BJT input, may not work right in specific apps..)
opa627(fet input and big upgrade..but big money too..)
and many more!

get a few samples and see if they make a difference before you buy a bunch.. the rest of the circuit might make more of a difference in the sound than a few opamps do.. you might have to replace a bunch in specific places to hear a difference, remember, the audio chain is only as good as the weakest link.

:thumb: good luck!

OPA604 and OPA134 would be other options - but don't just replace the chips without some testing. The amps may oscillate when you replace the op. amps.

yes those are other good opamps too! there are a LOT to choose from, so get a few samples of each and really listen to each of them, A/B them with the stock channels and rest your ears often in the sessions to that your mind doesn't start "hearing" what you expect to hear, not what you really hear..

Before you start thinking about this how big is your desk & are you using the stock PSU.

You may find it necessary to upgrade the PSU if you are doing extensive i.c replacing, since many of the i.c`s that people are mentioning here draw a lot (like several times) more current than the originals.

I would suggest that you look on the Trident user group around May 2002.  This is when I bought my desk, & Mike Dunn posted quite a bit of info/suggestions about chip upgrades for the trimix.  He has tried out a few of the chips mentioned & has ideas as to the difference, if any, that they make.

I didn`t change any of the chips on my desk, but I did build a new PSU for it.

For what its worth some people consider that part of the sound in these desks is down to the fact that it does use chips like the TL072, but ultimatley the choice is yours!!

hope this helps

Most like the way the TL071 chips sound in the channel as it's part of the charm of the console. However upgrading the fader buffers on the subgroup outputs with NE5534 chips will do wonders and was part of the original design (Trident went with TL071's there when they went into production to save some money). You will see a little cap pad next to those TL071 spots left empty, simply put a 33pf ceramic cap there and then swap the associated TL071 with an NE5534 and bamm welcome to a stiffer output.

You can try OPA604's and OPA134's as well however they suck more power from an already whimpy power supply (The little black PSU that came with those consoles sucked ass). Do yourself a favor and upgrade the +/-18v portion of the PSU with a Acopian gold box; you can still use the old PSU for your other voltages.

Back to the Burr Brown OPA604 and 134, after doing an A/B test I like the 134 of the 604; the 604 was to clinical. However in the end Im using NE5534's with the added cap.

If you want to swap out all your TL071's in the other sections, mic input etc... give it a try on a couple of modules so you can see if you like it however if you like the Burr Brown thing and do it to all your modules you will have to upgrade that PSU due to the current draw.

You can actually use something called a TLE0271 this is a drop in replacement more modern spec so to speak for the TL071; it uses less current too.

All that said considering your console is only 16 channels you might survive the current draw, however the upgraded PSU at 6.5 amps made a difference you could feel in the sound to my Series 70.

Hey all, thanks for the help!

I did join the Trident users group, and just so you know-
The person who had this before me actually had their tech build a new power suppy. He said the guy did a great job. I haven't taken the hood off yet, but I'll have a look inside. I'm probably not interested in modding the whole board unless I fall in love with the sound on the modded channels. Though, I remember seeing the open pad down by the TL071 on the fader; and the extra input channel I got with the trimix actually had the NE5534 put in.

unbound, maybe try putting the NE5534's in your subgroup fader buffers and then in the master (Red FADERS) use the OPA134 or NE5534 as well.

enjoy.
