TL074L replacement

Hi all,

Posted this over at the Sound Skulptor forum but I thought I'd try here as well.

I have had a problem with an MP573 that I built recently where the LED doesn't work. I just found some time to troubleshoot it and noticed a glaring mistake: I've put on the TL074L backwards.

I'll try to desolder it but I don't anticipate much luck with that. So I'm looking for a replacement but in the store I normally order from (Elfa/Distrelec in Sweden) don't have that exact model. What they have are TL074CDT and TL074IDT, both SMD and smaller. Also did a search on Mouser although a bit wasteful to order from them for a 1€ part) but they don't seem to have it either actually.

Any recommended replacement? I've Googled a bit but admittedly I'm a bit novice so I'm not exactly sure what to look for.

As stated above you can use any TL074. If you are having problems removing the chip & you soldered the chip in try cutting the legs close to the body of the chip then you can remove them individually, it's much easier. If the chip is in the wrong way round it will be dead.

The chips just fall out with it, but they are expensive !!!

Thank you Rob, that's how I've done before so it should be pretty straight forward. Just cut legs and clean up. If it's dead anyway, no point to salvage.

FYI I received an end of life notice from digikey for the TI TL072.

More and more through hole stuff is disappearing, does this mean the end of the world is coming or am I on crack cocaine?

The transition to SMD technology has been going on for decades. There are significant cost reduction benfits from SMD. If the large manufacturers stop buying through hole, the hobby crowd is not big enough to justify continued production. There may be some military versions that survive longer but they will be more expensive.

TL072s were both cheap and good, they will be missed.

They aren't going away completely, you can always stick an SOIC TL072 on an adapter board if you need to put it into an existing through hole layout.

The TI page should at least say "not recommended for new designs" if they have an EOL date planned.

Those are both SOIC package shipped in a tube instead of reel. The tape and reel variants (TL072CDR and TL072IDR) are still marked as active, so I think this is a bunch of crying over nothing.

There's the TLE "Excalibur" line that's supposed to be the better versions? Like the TLE072..etc..

I have a quantity of vintage TL072s pulled from professional mixers of the 80s and 90s. Only $50 each.

Try www.UTSOURCE.com. Currently they have 33,000 in stock. They have tons of NOS, they buy overstock and sell them. I have paid as little as .85 for OPA2134s. They are legit and not bootleggers.

I would suggest buying a lot. I will buy 10-100X what I need, if it's getting dicey. I just bought the last 2000 of a 50K center detent pot that they gave NO notice on discontinuing. I was lucky. I am now having them made from another vendor.

And SMD is not the end of the world. You can order a paste screen for under 100$ when you buy the PCBs and buy a small reflow oven for a few 100$, screen them with CHIPQUIK solder paste and solder them in seconds.
If you change the design, remember to not move any parts and you won't have to get a new screen. I can build the Tutti mic pre, 12 in 5 hours, no errors, and the listening testing that Sunset Sound has done proves that they are identical to the originals.

Maybe a little late to ask this now, but what is the "L" variant? I can't find any mention of it in the TI datasheet.

I noticed that too. It's what's stamped on the actual IC. In the BOM it's simply listed as TL074

Guess I'll throw out this question as well: I'm looking at buying some sockets as a good-to-have thing for future builds. There's a pretty significant price difference between the ones I found here; I don't mind splashing out, just wanted to ask first so I don't go over the top, or worse, under. Thanks Volker. Price was a no-brainer so I went ahead and ordered these (and some other items) as to not take any chances. About the same delivery cost as from my usual store as well.

This may be debatable.
The problem with "tulip" sockets is they tend to have a grip that exceeds the pull strength of some IC pins, so when you pull off an IC, you break a leg, that stays in the socket, is impossible to take off, and the IC, which may have been good, is now unusable. And you have the additional hassle of replacing the socket. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but when it happens it is usually when you're in a hurry, your workbench is your knees and you hold the lighttorch in your mouth.
I've had enough cases to use almost exclusively the chep ones with spring contacts. I have equipment built in the 70's with these that still work.
They exist with gold-flashed contacts, but it would make sense only the IC pins were also gold-flashed.
Now for SIL packages (THAT chips) I use tulip contacts because spring contact DIL socketsdo not exit (at least I have never seen one), and I've tried cuting a DIL16 and it doesn't have enough grip.
