I was reading a little and found this thread:

Here it's mentioned that small toroidal transformers can work good for audio.

I'm considering building the EZ1270 (edit 1290 whoops!) Neve project. Does anyone know the ratio I'd need if I were to try this idea?

I'd say it's 20 short of the EZ1290.

It may work on the input but you will not have the Neve sound. You want that sound then get the correct iron.

Allied has some really low cost transformers. Worth a try? Anything there?

It seems like many great products were founded on a cheap design regimen (Original MArshall amp trannies, LA2A, Fender's amps and guitars, Jensen speakers, etc). So... cheap doesn't have to be bad.

Hopefully this will turn into an interesting thread.
 
iron and copper used to be cheaper and made better in general ; and silicon expensive and noisy if available
probably not going to have much luck with those telecom/data transformers to pass full bandwidth audio
I am assuming you meant ez1290-- output needs a gapped transformer, input needs a mic transformer, I don't know the ratio.
there will be a group buy coming up for an output that will work.
without the right iron you probably won't get the right sound.
iron is not intrinsically going to sound good. for experimentation/color breadboard up a simple mic amp like

to drive  experimental output iron

These Red Dot parts have been around for 40 years. This line used to say "CPS".

Frequency Response: + 2.0 DB, at 300 Hz to 100K Hz

Many musicians will not be happy if you cut off three octaves of bass.

You can get deeper bass if you drive with a very lo-Z source. A zero-Z source may actually get near 40Hz.

The 50mW (+17dBm) rating applies at 300Hz and some fairly high THD. The power rating declines 6dB per octave: : -1dBm at 37Hz.

With a 200 ohm dynamic mike into the 600r winding, you might get below 100Hz and more level than a dynamic has.

But the best use for these things is the original: walkie-talkies and pulse circuits.

There are also the modem transformers, with very tight phase-shift specs, but bass response at least as bad or worse.
