Transistor selecting?

I replaced a transistor in an Echoplex Ep-4. It had some colored markings on it as though it had been selected somehow. I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on how it might have been selected and if I still need to select with modern parts. Here's the circuit. The transistor in question is Q4. It is an MPS8098. Thanks, Ben

This is in the audio path? The base looks to be sitting really close to the + supply rail.

Hey Bob,

Yes, audio path. The record/erase head is right to the right of that bias trap.
