I have yet to actually use one of them there reissue's so I had a couple of questions as I was looking one over for a buddy of mine.

With the input pot to the far left and the output pot at about 12 o'clock there is still signal present. Is this normal in the reissue's?
I am thinking it is not as the input pot is at infinity. But then I am also thinking that it could be because the output gain is loud enough.

Secondly the input pot which appears to be a 1Klog seemed to have a spot between infinity(far left) and about 9 o'clock where there seemed to be a lack of gain adjustment. I am wondering if the pot needs to be cleaned already as the unit is fairly new or if this is just standard with the reissues?

Lastly GR meter with no signal present should sit @ 0VU but this one does not having me think a tune up is in order or again is that another reissue quirk?

Pucho,

I've got one of their 6176's, and the 1176 part of it behaves identically to what you described. If I play a DI'd guitar into it cranked, there is a signal present at output even with the input pot down at infinity. Also, the dead spot between infinity and just shy of 9 o'clock is there also. The GR meter sits just a little bit above 0 VU when there's no gain reduction, but I'm not picky enough to adjust it. I'm not sure what the differences are between the full 1176 reissue and the one they use in the dual 1176 and the 6176 are, but mine sounds just fine to me. :thumb:

Mucho Gracias.

cool man that saves me some time with having to put in a new pot.... I havn't used the reissues yet so to hear a second one does that tells me that my issues are common and do not need fixing.

SO I am down to doing a tune up so when GR gets pressed it reads 0VU VS shy of zero.

Best part was it was sworn to me that the unit was not working and that adjusting the input pot did nothing. When I pulled the unit out of the rack and tested it. I worked as it should have except for the issues described and the gr not reading 0 with no signal present.

Rob's patchbay may have been the issue as to why it wasn't working while it was racked up at his place. There were (are?) many issues with his patchbay.

My original 1176's (black revF) output a VERY low level signal under the conditions that you describe, and the meter losing cal is also common to my originals, but it seems to be related to unplugging or turning them off.

This doesn't relate to your specific question, but I was shown, by a major tech at a major studio (sorry, no names) that there are at least 2 resistors in the reissues that are not correct. The values are a few decades off, and people have noticed in the sound. Once said tech found the difference and replaced the resistors with the correct value, everyone seemed happy.

Just sayin'.

Yep the dodgy resistor in the early reissues has been discussed here before - the answer is not in the threads any more..
However a few people here have the info (I dug up the old thread trough a little trawling and have given it to at least one person - sorry i didn't keep copy)

Jeff. I have known about them there resistors. major case of suck.

Good Dr sir, Yes his patchbay was part the problem... However those were fixed according to the man. I was just double checking on the reissues. I have never had any major problems with 1176's of course then again I have never had the input pot at infinity or really watched the gr meter with no audio coming in. Got an idea of fix for that scorpion as well. Looks like a a few of the meters need replacing and on the gain on buss 3 that shows with no audio present is either a cap to ground or a bad chip... We had a similar situation with a vr at work still sourcing our fix for that. It most likely will be a similar fix for the scorpion.

I think the biggest problem with the Scorpion has to do with the fact that the line input is derived by padding down the input to the mic pre :? I'm trying to figure out a mod to bypass the mic pre while in "line input" mode. May not be possible...

So the input attenuator is not the 600 Balanced T attenuator on these reissues?

Can anyone share these wrong resistors?

-bb

There was a wrong value resistor in the output amp stage . It was one of the pair of R's that biases up the base of Q4. Both resistors should be equal and are, in the 1176, supposed to be 2.7 Meg each. The top resistor was indeed 2.7 Meg but the bottom one was 270K!
