Where would I insert a resistor/attenuator to cut the headphone-output.
As it is, it's way too hot for my (55 ohm) phones.

UPDATE at 15th post below - 4/20/08

I'm really interested in this, but I'm also a complete noob with only a few builds under my belt.

Would this be a better alternative than a passive summing box? Are there any mods you would do to give this puppy a little mojo?

Funny you should ask. I've got a line mixer project that's been percolating in the back of my mind for a few days and I'll be starting a thread about it here very soon, maybe even later today. What I'm planning on is level, pan, PFL and a couple of switchable auxes. It's for people who want to mix out of the box, using outboard gear, and don't need a full-featured console but do need more control than a simple summing box provides.

I second that!

I'm starting to gather quite a bit of outboard gear and right now am using an old soundcraft board to mix and send back into the box as stereo. That board also adds a lot of noise.

I too am needing this (or something better) for general mixing and auxing my outboard synths and effects. I already have a Rolls 10ch 1 rack spc. mixer (not to shabby) and 3 Rane 26b (?) mixer/splitters.
....That's four rack spaces with only one aux channel, plus 3 normal'd patch bays for flexibility.....now that's seven spaces.
Rod Elliot's site has what looks like a good mixer design.
I'm curious what NYDave will come up with.

Is there an alternative to the TL084? I'm planning on building this, but I want to exploit any possible upgrades before doing so.

What about just building the volume/pan section with the correct resistance values to make this passive, and use my fav pres for make up gain? What values would I use?

UPDATE:

I'm finally getting around to surgically gutting my PAIA 9402 line mixer and transplanting fresh organs...everything but the faceplate.

I wanted to run this schematic by you guys, for any opinions (eg gain resistor values).

This will be very SIMPLE, no talkback, no eq, no mics.,,,,etc.
This will only be used for realtime synth work, no software sequencing.
I will be adding a total of 4 (!!) more effect send/returns.
Though maybe a pre-fade listen option, and a master fader.
(I addicted to masterfading  )
I'll need to add an aux rack face for all the effect connections.

Can you give it a quick glance ?
Here is the schematic (before the changes listed above).
