urei bl-40 problems

Hi guys,

I just picked up a Urei BL-40 modulimiter. However, it makes things sound really thin. I'm assuming something is wrong with it.
Here is an example of a snare drum with and without the BL-40. Keep in mind no attempt was made to get a "good" sound, I just threw up a SM57 and hit record.

Any guesses as to the cause?

As I mentioned on Gearslutz, old/bad electrolytics in the signal path are the most likely culprits.

And be sure to cround -out if using it unbalanced, as this unit is transformerbalanced..
