I always wondered how you adjust the gain on these pre's.
Grab a coin , a flat screw driver ? or do you use an extrernal pad / output fader ?

They're fixed gain designs. Some have implemented a gain control between stages but that affects circuit operation. Most use attenuation before or after or both.

V76 is not a fixed gain design. That coin slot is a 12-step gain selector, just another rotary switch you could easily upgrade with a knob. http://gwagner.50webs.com/v76.htm

V72 is fixed. http://gwagner.50webs.com/v72.htm

For V72 I would probably put a 20dB U-pad on input for the rare cases where you might clip the input transformer. Then a more accurate (5dB steps?) 600-ohm rotary T-pad after output transformer. The input pad might be a handy upgrade for the V76 as well.
