Many compressors use the already “processed” (compressed) audio signal to create the bias voltage and therefore i can imagine will sound “muddy”. Now this can be used as a feature as we know. Another option is the side chain (also well known).
So here the twist:
Use a copy of the VariMu circuit as a side chain (see drawing).
