Does the DBX 2151 easely replace with more actual types?
I just tested a desk with these inside, and 96 times unity gain sums a little to noisy to my book... Ad to that the masterbuss compression, and oh-oh...

THAT 218x (2180/2181 depending on trimmable/pre-trimmed version)

If the VCAs were at unity, it might not be the VCAs... or it might be the summing amp... Can you switch the VCAs out and does it get quieter?

That said, I konw that Scenaria had a console a while ago that you could switch the VCAs out on. They were 2150's or 2151's. The board sounded much better with them out.

Try 218x THAT VCAs and see if that lights your fire. Search the GSSL comp mets for more info. there's a million posts on the subject.

Cheers Keith!

It is sure that it was the VCA's,
but the unity thing was not correct, we did push some faders all the way up

These are in a desk dated mid 80's btw. I'm sure a part of the "sonic charm" is in the fact of these VCA's used and what would happen if more transparent chips were used? I could replace a few channels and see what happens but it's not (yet) my desk, making this very difficult to perform...
