I realised shortly after writing that, that "catholic" is almost absurd these days, as most of the population isn't religious anymore, even if a lot of them are still baptised.

Besides, it was wrong in another way; Spain is one of the leaders in the field.

It is strange that two nations (Ireland and Spain) that suffered similar problems with religion turned out so different. Maybe I shouldn't expect a connection between organ donations and religion?
 
I would say there is a connection with religion,  it's just the opposite direction. Catholics are more likely to donate organs,  that's what the data seems to show, and what they say as well.  It is  actually encouraged by the religion and viewed as a noble act. The only thing the Catholic Church would oppose is an opt-out system,  as they require explicit consent of the doner.
