What attenuation values would you choose?

I'm bulding the 1176 Rev D clone, and will build a stepped T attenuator from scratch until I get around sourcing a real one.

My question is, what values of attenuation would you deem usable?

My rotary switch is only 12 postion (2 pole)

I was thinking of just having it increment in 2db steps, but then I was thinking of having other values? Or is this a stupid idea? ie, 0 , -2 , -6 -10 -16 -20 -24 -30 -40 etc....

try 2 db steps AND put a separate switchable 20 dB T in front of it, so you can extend from -24 to -44.

Good idea.

I recently used some goldpoint 24 position attenuators which are really nice - lets you do it all in with one switch.

Make sure all your steps are even, at least in the middle of the working range, otherwise it's really frustrating! (Sometimes it's useful to have a couple of 'extreme' settings at either end, with a bigger step.)
