Most likely slave labor, or children, or both.
I can't speak for all of China, but my understanding of some of the CM factories are like little cities. The workers work there, have a place to eat, dorms to sleep in, onsite med care, etc. Lots of young girls come from agricultural areas that are very poor, work 10-14hr days, 7 days a week for about 10 or 11 months and then go home for a month or two.
I'm sure that the wages are low, but compared to starving on a farm that factory looks like paradise.
The average standard of living in China is going up a little as I understand it. The guys I work with that travel to China often say that 6 years ago the streets in Shanghai were jammed up with bicycles, but now they are jammed up with cars! So it follows that they are either giving away cars in China, or making more $ (and I mean $ as in USD).
