One of the biggest mistakes we made here in Ireland was  , in the last century we tore up most of the tracks laid down in the 1800's , it would have solved our transport infrastructure issues long into the future and been a major tourist attraction to more rural parts of the country ,where things really are dying now . Arseholic government here want us stacked and racked in city high rise , and a doubling of the population within the city bounds over the next 20 years or so , meanwhile property rental costs easily trump the cost of a mortgage on a given property by about 30-40% , if you have the cash to get the ball rolling you could pay a second mortgage and have nice chunk of change left over on a rental property , the average here now is about 50% of household income goes on rent , where if you have a mortgage your dropping about 30% .
