I used peter purpose's LA3A-500 with my tube mic on sax the other day.  Tube mic -> LA3A -> Symphony I/O.

Very nice! Classic tone. Bright but doesn't seem harsh at all.

Was the LA3A doing any GR?

What mic & position did you use?

Thanks for posting the sample. I love my LA3A-500 - but I've never tried it with as a mic pre.
 
Just remember it won't work as a preamp for most mics, and especially badly with any dynamic mic. The input impedance is too high for them to behave correctly and will cause bandwidth issues (read: high pass filter). Many tube mics on the other hand will work fine due to their relatively high internal gain and output transformers that set their output impedance low enough to drive compressor inputs.
