is right to use a precision opamp rectfier to avoid distortion? or the analog  VU meters are done to run with the classic bridge?

If important enough (?) an active circuit could mimic the smaller forward voltage of obsolete (unobtanium) rectifiers.  No I am not inclined to kill any brain cells designing one. 

Mechanical VU meters are eye candy, why worry about the accuracy of eye candy?
